Hive, Nest and smart thermostats: fixing the usual disconnects

When a smart thermostat stops controlling the heating, the fault is nearly always one of three links: the thermostat's batteries, the wireless pairing to the receiver, or the receiver's link to your hub. Check batteries first, then the receiver's status light by the boiler, then whether the app sees the device at all. The receiver is wired into the boiler circuit: opening or rewiring it is engineer work.
Why has my smart thermostat stopped controlling the heating?
Work along the chain. The thermostat itself: flat batteries or a discharged unit is the most common failure, and most models show a low-battery warning long before they die. The wireless pairing: a thermostat that lost its link to the receiver will usually say so on screen or in the app. The receiver: the small wired box near the boiler has status lights, and their pattern (steady, flashing, colour) tells you whether it has power, a pairing, and an internet connection; your model's manual decodes the pattern. Most systems keep a fallback: the receiver box typically has a manual override button that runs the heating without the smart layer, which keeps you warm while you fix the clever part.
How do I re-pair the thermostat or reconnect it to Wi-Fi?
Re-pairing is model-specific but follows one shape: put the receiver into pairing mode (usually holding its button until the light changes), then follow the pairing steps on the thermostat or in the app. Wi-Fi reconnection lives in the app's device settings, and it is worth checking whether the hub itself changed, because a new broadband router is the classic cause of every smart device dropping off at once. After a power cut, give the system ten minutes before touching anything: receivers and hubs often re-establish their links on their own, and interrupting them mid-handshake restarts the clock.
Where is the line between DIY and an engineer?
Batteries, pairing, app settings and the receiver's override button are yours. The receiver's wiring is not: it is connected to the boiler's control circuit at mains voltage, and replacing or rewiring it belongs to an electrician or heating engineer. The same applies to moving the receiver or wiring in a replacement thermostat kit. If an appliance is misbehaving in ways that suggest a product fault rather than a connection problem, check the manufacturer's support pages and the official UK product recalls register before paying for a visit.
