Washing machine faults you can check before calling anyone

Most washing machine callouts end with a blocked filter, a kinked hose, an unbalanced load or a stuck door interlock rather than a broken machine. The pump filter, drain hose and detergent drawer are user-serviceable. Anything electrical beyond the plug and fuse, and anything needing the panels off, is repair-engineer work. Unplug before touching the filter, and check the recalls register for your model while you are at it.
It will not drain or spin: what do I check?
The pump filter first: the small hatch at the front bottom hides a screw-out filter that collects coins, hair grips and lint, and a blocked one is the most common cause of both symptoms. Unplug the machine, put a shallow tray and towels down (a full drum of water follows the filter out), and screw it back firmly, because a loose filter leaks on the next wash. Then the drain hose: kinked behind the machine, pushed too far into the standpipe, or blocked at the spigot under the sink. Then the load itself: a single heavy item like a bath mat can keep a machine from reaching spin speed by design; it is protecting its bearings, not failing.
Why will the door not open at the end of a cycle?
Interlocks hold the door for a minute or two after the cycle ends by design. If it stays locked, the machine usually still holds water: run a drain-only programme first. Still locked after draining and a few minutes unplugged is a genuine interlock fault, and the release for it varies by model, so the manual, not force, is the next step. A door yanked against a live interlock turns a cheap part into an expensive one.
Which faults are NOT do-it-yourself?
Anything that means removing the machine's panels: motors, brushes, bearings, heaters, control boards and the interlock itself. Anything electrical past the plug and its fuse. And any machine that trips the electrics, smells of burning or leaks onto its own electrics comes off the socket and stays off until someone qualified looks at it. Before booking a repair, check the model against the official UK product recalls register; recalled machines are repaired or replaced at the manufacturer's cost, and washing machines and tumble dryers feature on that register more than any other white goods.
