The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, the last Sunday of the month. It is a good day to do the small jobs that are easy to forget, because the date comes round whether you remember or not.
Test the alarms
Press the test button on every smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm. If one is silent, replace the battery or the unit today, not next weekend.
Think about the boiler
If the boiler has not been serviced in the last twelve months, now is the time, before the first cold week when every heating engineer is busy. The HomeLynx Passport uses a yearly interval for a boiler service and for a gas safety check, and every five years for an electrical inspection. Those are recommended intervals, not legal deadlines, and the Passport says so on the page.
Clear the gutters
Leaves are down and the rain is coming. A blocked gutter is the cheapest problem in the house to fix in October and one of the most expensive to ignore until February.
Let the record do the remembering
If your home has a Passport, the next-due list already has every upcoming date on it, soonest first. Anything due within 14 days shows as a notice in your account, and on your phone if you use the Tradelynx app. A reminder is a nudge, not a guarantee, but it arrives before the cold does.
The Passport is free for any UK postcode. Claiming it takes an address, your name, an email and a sign-in code.
